Charter rates for superyachts in 2026 range from $50,000 to over $1 million per week. Here is everything you need to know about what drives the price — and how to get the best value at every level.
Understanding Superyacht Charter Rates in 2026
The cost of chartering a superyacht in 2026 varies enormously depending on the size of the vessel, the destination, the season, and the level of service you require. At the entry level of the superyacht market — vessels between 24 and 35 metres — weekly charter rates typically range from $50,000 to $120,000. Mid-range superyachts between 35 and 50 metres command rates of $120,000 to $300,000 per week, while the largest and most prestigious vessels — 60 metres and above — can reach $500,000 to over $1 million per week during peak season.
These figures represent the base charter fee only. The total cost of a superyacht charter is typically 30–40% higher once you account for the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), fuel, port fees, provisioning, and any additional expenses incurred during the voyage.
What Is the APA and How Does It Work?
“Budget 30–35% of the base charter fee for the APA — the fund that covers fuel, food, port fees, and all running expenses during your voyage.”
The Advance Provisioning Allowance — universally known as the APA — is a prepaid fund held by the captain to cover all running expenses during the charter. This includes fuel, port and marina fees, food and beverages, water toys, shore excursions, and any other costs incurred on behalf of the charter guests.
The APA is typically set at 30–35% of the base charter fee. On a $200,000 per week charter, you should budget an additional $60,000–$70,000 for the APA. At the end of the charter, the captain provides a full accounting of all expenditures, and any unspent funds are returned to you. If the APA is exhausted before the end of the charter — which can happen on high-fuel itineraries or with extensive provisioning — you will be asked to top it up.
Fuel is typically the largest single APA expense, particularly on motor yachts. A 50-metre motor yacht cruising at 12 knots can consume 400–600 litres of diesel per hour, making fuel costs a significant consideration when planning your itinerary.
Charter Rates by Destination: Mediterranean vs Caribbean
Destination has a significant impact on the total cost of a superyacht charter. The Mediterranean — particularly the French Riviera, Amalfi Coast, and Greek Islands — commands a premium during the peak summer season (June through September). A 40-metre motor yacht that charters for $180,000 per week in the Caribbean in January may command $220,000 per week in the Mediterranean in August.
The Caribbean and Bahamas offer excellent value during the winter season (November through April), with many of the same vessels available at lower rates than their Mediterranean summer pricing. The Maldives and Seychelles tend to command consistent year-round pricing due to the limited number of vessels operating in those waters and the high cost of positioning.
Fuel costs also vary significantly by destination. The Mediterranean, with its many marinas and short distances between anchorages, typically results in lower fuel consumption than the Bahamas or Caribbean, where longer passages between islands are common.
What Is Included in the Charter Fee?
The base charter fee covers the use of the yacht and the services of the professional crew for the duration of the charter. This includes the captain, first officer, chief engineer, chef, stewardesses, and deck crew — typically four to eight crew members on a 40–50 metre vessel.
The charter fee does not include the APA (see above), VAT or local taxes (which vary by jurisdiction — typically 20% in France, 13% in Greece, and 0% in international waters), the MYBA charter agreement administration fee, and any special equipment or services requested in advance.
Most charter yachts include a comprehensive inventory of water toys and tenders in the charter fee: jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks, snorkelling equipment, and a high-speed chase boat. Some vessels charge separately for premium toys such as submarines, hydrofoil boards, or seabobs.
How to Get the Best Value on a Superyacht Charter
The most effective way to maximise value on a superyacht charter is to work with an experienced broker who has direct relationships with yacht owners and managers. A good broker will have access to off-market opportunities, last-minute availability at reduced rates, and the negotiating leverage that comes from placing multiple charters per year with the same vessels.
Shoulder season — May and June in the Mediterranean, or October and November in the Caribbean — offers excellent value, with rates typically 15–25% lower than peak season and anchorages significantly less crowded. The weather during these periods is often superb, and the experience of having a famous bay or marina largely to yourself is something that peak-season charterers rarely enjoy.
Last-minute availability can also offer significant savings — owners would rather charter at a reduced rate than leave a vessel idle — but the selection of available yachts is naturally more limited, and the most popular vessels are rarely available at short notice.
Sample Charter Budgets for 2026
To give you a concrete sense of what to expect, here are three sample charter budgets for a one-week Mediterranean charter in July 2026:
Entry Level — 28-metre motor yacht, 6 guests: Base charter fee $65,000 + APA $22,000 + VAT (Greece) $8,450 = approximately $95,000 total.
Mid-Range — 42-metre motor yacht, 8 guests: Base charter fee $185,000 + APA $64,750 + VAT (France) $37,000 = approximately $287,000 total.
Ultra-Premium — 65-metre motor yacht, 12 guests: Base charter fee $480,000 + APA $168,000 + VAT (international waters, 0%) = approximately $648,000 total.
